Leading fitness trainers and health experts are reporting big sexual performance gains from red light therapy treatments. Emerging clinical research is showing the same thing—the  potential for red light therapy to improve sex drive. This post examines the research on red light therapy and sexual health and shares the experiences of leading pros who are seeing big performance gains. 

How Does Red Light Therapy Improve Men’s Sexual Health?

If you’re not familiar with red light therapy, this post gives a good overview of what it is and how it works. These are the basics: A quality red light therapy device delivers safe, concentrated wavelengths of natural light to your skin and cells. Natural light has an anti-inflammatory effect, improves blood circulation, and stimulates your mitochondria, so your body can produce more ATP energy. [1,2]

Stimulating the Leydig Cells: Research is in its early stages, but medical experts have suggested that red and near infrared wavelengths of natural light stimulate the Leydig cells, which are responsible for producing testosterone in the testicles. It has been theorized that this enhanced energy production can help naturally increase testosterone hormone levels. [3,4,5]

Red light therapy, and Joovv’s devices, are not currently approved by the FDA for testosterone or sexual health treatments, and the mechanisms of action are still being studied. Ben Greenfield is a world-renowned personal trainer, endurance athlete, and natural health expert. To see if red light therapy was legit, Ben shined a Joovv light on his testicles for a few weeks and wrote this famous Men’s Health article about the boost in sex drive and performance he felt.

Joovv and Bristlecone are Conducting Studies on Red Light Therapy, Keto, and Hormone Health

Joovv has teamed up for a series of studies with Bristlecone Health, to evaluate how red light therapy treatments and a ketogenic diet affect hormone balance and testosterone production. So far, the initial results have been eye-opening for men’s hormone health

In the first Joovv-Bristlecone study, men were broken into two treatment groups. One group received full-body Joovv red light therapy treatments and followed a ketogenic diet, while the other group received the same LED light therapy treatments, but ate a standard, non-ketogenic diet. 

Men See Improved Testosterone Levels (T-Levels): Adult men in both the control (standard diet) and experimental (keto diet) groups in the Joovv-Bristlecone study saw increases in their testosterone levels after consistent, daily red light therapy treatments.

Men who received only light exposure saw healthy increases in their T-levels, in the range of 25% to 45% increases. But the men who did both red light treatments and ate the keto diet saw even larger increases, at least doubling their free testosterone levels. While the experimental group (red light and keto) was small, the initial results are very promising.

While these clinical results are positive, keep in mind that Joovv’s devices are not cleared for hormone treatments by the FDA.

Emerging Clinical Research Shows Light Therapy’s Potential for Boosting Men’s Sexual Health

Independent clinical research over the last decade has also shown compelling results for red light therapy and sexual health. 

Testosterone and Sexual Satisfaction: A 2016 study evaluated 38 men with a diagnosed low sexual desire. Researchers measured their testosterone levels and separated the men into two groups, with one group receiving a clinical dose of light therapy in the early mornings. In addition to higher sexual satisfaction, the men in the group treated with natural light saw their T-levels rise significantly.

The control group that didn’t receive light therapy did not see testosterone rises, but the active light therapy group showed a huge increase from about 2.1 ng/ml to 3.6 ng/ml in just 2 weeks. [6] 

Dr. Andrea Fagiolini, the study’s lead researcher, summarized the sexual satisfaction results:

"We found fairly significant differences between those who received the active light treatment, and the controls. Before treatment, both groups averaged a sexual satisfaction score of around 2 out of 10, but after treatment, the group exposed to the bright light was scoring sexual satisfaction scores of around 6.3—a more than 3-fold increase on the scale we used. In contrast, the control group only showed an average score of around 2.7 after treatment." [7]

Medical Science is Showing Red Light Therapy Improves Male Fertility and Sperm Motility

Numerous other studies over the last 5 years have found that increased natural light exposure to a man’s testes actually increases the sperm’s ability to move and swim. This movement, called sperm motility, is a key measure of male fertility and reproductive health. As a result, many researchers are concluding that light therapy can have a significant effect on treating male infertility. [8,9,10,11]

Safe for Sexual Health Treatments: In addition to noting increased sperm motility, a 2017 study published in Scientific Reports found that these red light therapy treatments were safe, and did not induce any oxidative DNA damage to the sperm or testes. [12]

Other Health Benefits of Red Light Therapy
