Why Non-Organic is a Fad, Reasons to De-stress Your Life, and the Power of Jojoba Oil: Joovv AMA with Elizabeth Walling of The Nourished Life

Joovv AMA with Elizabeth Walling of The Nourished Life

About a year ago, I was deeply impacted by Elizabeth Walling’s book, The Nourished Metabolism.  At a cross roads in my own personal health journey, her book provided a lot of insight as well as confirmations of how I was feeling.  I found Elizabeth’s approach to health so refreshing!  Since reading her book, I have had the pleasure of following her blog, which is a treasure trove of great information.  Whether she is posting recipes on healthy, homemade gummy treats for your kids or information on gut health, I have always found her blog fascinating and fun.

In addition to her blog,The Nourished Life, Elizabeth is the author of The Nourished Metabolism and Love Your Body. She enjoys thinking outside of the box and embracing an approach to getting healthy that's all about common sense, loving your body, and feeling awesome. You can read more about Elizabeth here. Elizabeth was kind enough to participate in a Joovv AMA.  And we're super excited to share your questions and her answers.  Enjoy!

What is the most important piece of advice you could give someone that is working on healing their metabolism?

Love yourself. If you want to make positive, lasting changes for your health, it has to come from a place of love. Treat yourself with care and respect, and listen to your body. It has a lot of important messages to share with you.

My mom thinks organic foods are overpriced and just a fad.  What are 1-2 things you would tell her?

I would say non-organic is a fad – and hopefully a short-lived one! All food was “organic” just a few decades ago. The intense use of industrial chemicals in (and on) our foods is relatively new.

Organic food can be expensive, but there are creative ways to fit more organic into your budet. You can grow a little backyard garden. Or visit your local farmers market and get to know the farmers there. Many of them are spray-free or strive to use as few industrial chemicals as possible, and often their produce is much more budget-friendly than what you’ll find at the grocery store.

Organic processed foods are usually the most expensive (things like crackers, cookies, cereal, etc.). If you can make a few more meals from scratch, you can actually save money while still eating organic!

But in the end, just do what you can. Don’t worry too much about doing it all, or doing everything the “right” or “perfect” way. Stress is the enemy of health, after all!

For optimal metabolic health, what are 2-3 reasons why it’s so important to keep stress to a minimum?

The body isn’t meant to deal with chronic, long-term stress. Stress hormones are meant to help you when you’re in a famine or being chased by a hungry tiger – essentially, they’re for short-term emergencies.

The problem is, the body doesn’t know the difference between different stressors, so it reacts the same way to an overdue bill as it would to that giant, hungry feline. So when we have stress hitting us from every angle, we’re overloaded with stress hormones, like cortisol, constantly.

This causes skin problems, mood swings, digestive issues, sleep disturbances, and a lot more. Long term, stress can lead to serious conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

So help your body out and lower stress where you can! Every little bit helps. Good nutrition goes a long way. So does a good night’s rest, a walk outdoors, and some meditation.

What is your favorite skin care product?  Do you have a daily regimen that you can share?

Jojoba oil is just my favorite! I use it for oil cleansing and makeup removal. My sensitive, acne-prone skin loves it. I’m working on infusing some jojoba oil with calendula flowers to for herbal oil cleansing.

Have you ever used red light therapy? Did it work?

I don’t have a lot of experience with red light therapy. I definitely need to look into it more!

What is your favorite go-to product or process for a total-body detox?

I’m a big fan of silymarin (milk thistle extract) to support liver health, but otherwise, I think a healthy, balanced lifestyle is the best “detox” you can give your body.

What is your favorite form of exercise?  How important is it that you do it on a daily basis?

Walking is my go-to exercise. I also do weight lifting because I love being strong. But when it comes to daily exercise, walking is a must-do for me. I wear a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day. I don’t always get it, but aiming high definitely keeps me more active than I would be otherwise.

Do you get 8 hours of sleep?

Absolutely! Can’t live without it. It’s one of my top priorities.

What is the one book that you’ve recommended the most (and why)?

Lately it’s been Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom by Dr. Christiane Northrup. It’s just a stunningly complete look at women’s health from a mind-body perspective (that also involves a lot of awesome science). Hands-down, every woman should read this book.
